Party 4 Life Pickleball Tournament 2011

Sun City Mesquite will be holding its 3rd annual “Party 4 Life” Charity pickleball tournament the weekend before the Huntsman World Pickleball Games in October 2011.

The tournament will serve as a warm up for the Huntsman Games while at the same time support the Virgin Valley Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

We will be having Mixed Doubles on Friday October 7th from 10am-6pm.
Men’s and Women’s doubles will be held on Sat October 8th from 8am-4pm

Due to limited space we are limiting the entrants to 200.

This event will be a USAPA sanctioned event with all results reported.

Sun City Mesquite is located 30 minutes south of St.George, Utah. We will have limited free RV parking

I want to personally thank all of you who attended this years Party4Life pickleball tournament! The day was a huge success and we were able to raise over $30,000 through all of our different tournaments. The money will be donated to the Mesquite Veterans Association to benefit the new Mesquite Veterans Hall. I can't think of a better way to honor our local veterans.

It was a long day but we managed to finish before dark. Thank you to those who helped by refereeing matches. A special thanks to Chuck, Susan and Lisa for helping and putting up with me.

Look forward to seeing all of you again in the spring.

Once again, a good pickleball tournament happens not because of the people running it, but by the people playing in it. Thanks You All!!

Nov 6th is the Sun City Mesquite's Party 4 Life Pickleball Tournament. It will be an exciting day benefitting the new Mesquite Veterans Center. There will be 2 divisions of Men's, Women's and Mixed Doubles. The Price is $20.00 which includes all events entered along with a BBQ Lunch and Tee Shirt.

We will start the morning off with Men's and Women's Doubles. Following a short lunch break, we will start Mixed Doubles

Tom Wheeler will have a vendor booth at the tournament. He will be selling an excellent "Caffeine Free" Vitamin Hydration drink called "9 Iron" Tom is also Donating a small amount of 9 Iron that will be available on the courts for you to try.

Tom will also have Solar Flashlights and Racquet Guards to protect you Pickleball Racquet. I will direct you to Toms Booth at the tournament. Because Tom is donating an additional portion of his sales to the American Cancer Society I would ask you all to support his booth.

St. George Pickleball Tournament Aftermath

So as you know my family and I recently attended a pickleball tournament in sunny Southern Utah. I learned quite a few things and not all of them had to do with the game.

First, yes we got creamed. By creamed I mean mutilated to the fullest extent. Going into the tourney the only thing we had to rate ourselves by was pickleball videos on the internet. These are deceiving because pickleball is not necessarily a fast sport. You cannot tell a difficulty level from an online video. Our honest opinion was we were either going to be really good, or get humbled. Believe me, by the end of the day we were ready to throw up from humble pie.

If this isn’t bad enough, most of the people we played were well above 60. One team member of the particular duo that gave Lance (23) and I (28) an old-fashioned schooling was 75. His partner was not much younger. Bob Klarich, the tournament director, called my mom when he received our entries. He wondered how we heard about the tournament, how we would rate ourselves, and told us that the players were very good in St. George. After this phone call we naively thought; “maybe he is nervous that these young players are coming to hustle them.” Now, we know he was just trying to look out for us. He didn’t want us to drive 400 miles for a beating when we could just stay at home and jump in front of a semi, he knew the outcome would be the same.

In our defense, we hadn’t been practicing the scoring right. It is harder to score in tournament play than what we had been practicing at home. Mom and dad spent their first four games trying to figure it out. That was about the only rules we didn’t have down though. So there we were lined up, one by one, like laboratory tomatoes waiting to be tested in a new high-speed blender. And one by one we jumped in, got pulverized, then scraped ourselves up and limped off the court. In fact, come to think of it, lab tomatoes don’t make the choice to be in a lab. So who is smarter?

Now, what I learned on the courts outside the game. The tournament is held in a planned retirement community. These people wake up, get on their golf cart, and drive to the pickleball courts. They play from seven to nine o’clock in the morning six days a week. It is a thin slice of heaven if you ask me. I am already trying to figure out how to retire in the next year. During our off time we associated with and became friends with many of the players. My mom was thinking about how many 75 year olds she knew that were so active and healthy – not many. I watched all of them in a row sitting and talking and do you know what I didn’t see? Not one cell phone. I was amazed, nobody sitting with their face glued to a 1x2” screen texting every thought that crosses their mind. When you have a conversation you are met with a friendly face and eye contact. Yes, this tournament was an eye-opener in more ways than one. There was an atmosphere present that is almost lost to our current generation. It was one of manners, courtesy, and respect. There was competition, but you let your skills show on the court, not in your mouth. My brother-in-law and I both work with the youth. We have both tried to get them into pickleball. Sometimes it seems they can’t put their phone down long enough to even hold a paddle. It was refreshing to associate with this group of people and I felt welcome. I don’t know of any similar paddle sport that a 23 year old can play against a 75 year old and have age difference play no advantage. Maybe that is why I like this game so much.

I can see myself playing it for a long time. Will I go back? Of course. We are already planning on attending the tournament in Mesquite this November. We know what to expect now and hope that in two months we will get beat a little less. Had we never entered a tournament we never would have known what was out there. We would have stayed in our little bubble of bliss. We may never get to the top of the rankings, but we all had a great time and met many wonderful people. Being a part of this tournament has helped me realize that getting old is not a bad thing. It doesn’t mean sitting in a wheel chair, or on the front porch complaining about how things used to be. Getting old can mean going to the courts and beating the crap out of some kids less than half your age with no assistance but a knee brace. It makes me excited to retire, that’s for sure. But for now, at age 28, I think I will enjoy being the young punk on the court

New Indoor Courts in St George!

Had a chance to play this morning at St George's new indoor pickleball facility. It is a winner! 4 well painted courts with concrete surface. They "boys" were all there Don Odle,Bill Dysert, Steve Hafen, Scott Lindsey and honorary "Boy" Mary Lynn Larson.

We had some good games and I noticed right away how well your eyes picked up the ball. Also the courts are painted Red and Blue with White stripes which makes line calls very easy.

I have a good feeling about this place. The owner is very nice and open to any ideas we bring him. We will be out there again Thursday morning at 8:00am

Once again the Sun River St. George Open is being held on Sept 18th and 19th. Mixed doubles will be on the 18th and Mens and Womens doubles on the 19th.

All events are double elimination. They are going to have 2 different age groups for each event. 18 to 54 in one, 54 and up in the other. The folks at Sun River know how to put a tournament together and it will be great time. $25.00 will cover tournament, T-Shirt and Choice of lunch items at their grill. OK the dust has settled and Sat, Nov 14th is the day of Sun City Mesquites pickleball tournament. It will be the same format as our last tournament.

Right now I am still in the planning stages but I can tell you that the Sun City community is planning many different activities including a Walk-a-Thon, Putting Tournament etc.. So there will be plenty for your non-playing guests to do. I will keep you posted on here as I get information.

But, right now the pickleball tournament will be like our spring tournament without the extreme heat. Plan on spending a full day enjoying Sun City Mesquite.

I just learned Gene Sams from Sun River passed away yesterday from an apparent heart attack. Gene was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. A true Gentleman who will be missed by everyone who ever had the chance to meet or play with him.

Good times were had by all who played in last nights tournament at Worthen Park in St George. Lacey did an excellent job directing the tournamnt and things went smoothly. Sun River St. George Open
Pickleball Tournament
September 18 and 19, 2009

Come join us at the Sun River St. George pickleball courts Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19 for championship play. Take Exit 2 off I-15 named Southern Parkway, turn west on SunRiver Parkway, right on Country Club Drive, then right on Blue Grass Way. Parking lot is on the eastside of the courts. Play starts at 8 AM each day. There will be three events:
Friday - Mixed Doubles
Saturday – Women’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles

To register for doubles event(s), submit a separate form for each participant:
Enter each event number plus your chosen partner’s name
OR enter each event number plus Need Partner. Please put your email address and/or phone number on the Registration form so the Tournament Directors can notify you when a partner is found.

Applications must be received no later than Monday, September 14. This should be a good warm up for those wishing to participate in the Huntsman Games.

All events will be double elimination, and will likely involve two brackets. Each event will have two age groups:
Ages 18-54
Ages 55 and up

The participant fee is $25.00 per person, regardless of the number of events you enter. Your fee includes an excellent T-shirt designed by SunRiver resident artist Ginger Miller as well as ONE lunch ticket for your choice of three lunches at Sun River’s renowned River Walk Grill on either Friday or Saturday. The three lunch choices are:
(1) hamburger, fries, and soft drink
(2) signature salad with chicken and soft drink
(3) turkey avocado wrap with house salad and soft drink

Sunriver Invitational

What a great tournament!

Yesterday I was lucky and got invited to play in the "Sunriver Invitational Tournament" The format was fantastic with 12 players rotating partners. You played 1 game with each of the other players and at the end added up all your points to find a winner. So every point counts! Even when you are up 10-0 you do not want to give the opposition 1 point because that point could cost you at the end.

I feel comfortable speaking for all the guests that were invited and saying "We had a GREAT time! Thank You Marty, Don and Bill for the invites. I plan on having a tournament with this format at Sun City Mesquite in the fall. Here is the email I got from Marty last night with the results

Last night I was invited to Entrada to play pickleball. I was told by Di Shanklin that this was “Smash mouth” pickleball and if I did not like getting hit with the ball this might not be the right group for me. I arrived early and got a nice tour of Entrada by Tom Wheeler.
I found myself mesmerized by the beauty of that area.

Then we started playing.

In my brief time playing pickleball the one thing I have come to realize is that most of the people that play this game are great people. There is just something about the game that draws competitive but friendly people. The Entrada group is no different.

I started playing and quickly thought I was in over my head. They were hitting it harder than I was used to and it took me a bit to catch up to the speed of the game. After a couple of games I felt like I had caught up and was really enjoying myself.

I don’t know about you guys but I hate to lose. At the same time, I don’t mind getting beat. You just realize that some players are better than you and you tell them “nice shot” after they hit it by you. I said”nice shot” often last night.

After 3 hours of solid play I was exhausted and still had a long drive home so it was time to go. I really enjoyed my time out there and hope to someday do it again.

I would like to invite all players to the IDAHO SENIOR GAMES in Boise ID. August 8,14-16 &20-23 , 2009. The Web site for more information and registration is www.idahoseniorgames.org . If any of you are in this area and need a little sports action, our games are fun, well organized and competitive. St George Tournament Info

Hi Everyone,

This is from Lacey Wallis about the Christmas in July tournament.

FAQ’s

1) We are playing at Vernon Worthern Park in St George on 400 East, right across the street from the St George Recreation Center.

2) We will not be having age brackets but almost all of our players are on the same level and there are no restrictions on the ability brackets.

3) There will be food and drinks which is included in the entry fee.

4) We will have t-shirts there which is also included in the entry fee.

5) The “Christmas in July” Theme is a charity event to help out the Dixie Care & Share, a charity which focuses on helping the homeless and less fortunate in and around our community. We will be having participants bring an unopened toy for a donation to the Dixie Care and Share in exchange for a raffle ticket for prizes.

6) We will have some fun special awards including a Super Trooper award for the oldest male & female players and a “Most Festive Team” special award which will be given to the best Christmas Themed pickleball outfits.

1st Ever Regional Pickleball Tournament Sun City Mesquite

Tournament Directors John Ramirez and Jim Eggenberger were delighted with the excellent attendance at the first ever Regional Pickleball Tournament conducted at Sun City Mesquite on May 16, 2009. The attendance more than doubled their expectations. 59 teams from Arizona, Nevada and Utah kept courts busy from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm. There was doubles competition in six different categories.

Earl Hill, Chairman, Pickleball Ambassadors in the USA from Surprise, Arizona; Don Odle, Western Regional Director, from St George, Utah; Pickleball Ambassadors Jo Hancock, Surprise, AZ, Char Schulte, Las Vegas, NV and Marty Grossman, St George, UT.

The fast growing sport of Pickleball is a designed for all ages. Players in this tournament ranged from their 20s to well over 70. Interestingly, the older players won most of the events. Anyone interested in learning more about the sport, contact Jim Eggenberger at 702 613-4244

St George Tournament

The city of St. George will be hosting a night tournament on July 17 and 18th. Team costs will be 40.00. Register at http://www.activityreg.com/. The 17th will be for beginers at 6:00 pm. Open and intermediate will be held on the 18th.
